Help using Monument Unmaking, the mobile AR app from 4for4's in partnership with Camosun Innovates and STEPS Public Art.

Getting started

  1. Install Monument Unmaking on a supported iOS or Android device.
  2. Allow Location and Camera when asked so nearby artworks can unlock and AR can appear.
  3. Visit one of the two downtown Victoria sites: the Vancouver Island Map mural or the Commerce Canoe sculpture.
  4. Select the artwork in the app, read about the artist and history, then open the AR view and point your camera at the piece.

Frequently asked questions

Monument Unmaking is a mobile augmented reality app that overlays artwork featuring marginalized peoples perspectives on public art in downtown Victoria, BC. It is meant to add context and encourage reflection on history, meaning, and whose stories are represented.

The main audience is younger people who want to learn about the cultural significance and history of the land in an engaging way. You do not need prior AR experience. Clear on-screen guidance is included so you can explore public art in person rather than staying indoors on a device.

The prototype is geofenced to Victoria pilot sites. AR overlays are built for two public artworks: the Vancouver Island Map mural and the Commerce Canoe sculpture. Additional monuments are out of scope for this first release.

Monument Unmaking is a Unity app for both iOS and Android. Your device needs to support AR (AR Foundation). Older phones or devices without AR hardware may not run the experience reliably.

Choose an artwork in the app to view information about the artist and history. When you are at the physical site, open the AR camera view and point your device at the installation so the overlay can appear. Follow any on-screen instructions. Good lighting and a steady hold help tracking.

Location checks whether you are near a public art site so nearby experiences can unlock, and helps place AR more accurately. Camera powers the live AR view. Photos is only used if you capture an AR image and choose to save it. You can change these anytime in device Settings. Denying a permission may limit nearby unlock, AR view, or saving captures.   • Confirm you are at one of the two Victoria sites and that Location is allowed (Precise Location works best).
  • Allow Camera access and point the device at the artwork, not the ground or sky.
  • Check that your phone supports AR and has a stable internet connection so monument content can download.
  • Move around slowly in good light. Large 3D assets can take a moment on some devices.
  • Restart the app if tracking still fails.

This prototype focuses on two selected artworks. Support for additional monuments is a possible future stretch, along with an administrative interface for uploading new content. The app is planned to remain active for at least one year, through August 2027.

Team 4for4's is a Camosun College capstone team (ICS and IMD) working with Camosun Innovates and STEPS Public Art. STEPS is a charity and social enterprise that fosters vibrant communities through public art.
